VAST (Vancouver Area Survivors of Torture)
Submitted by martina on March 4, 2013VAST assists refugees and newcomers who have endured torture, trauma and political violence through settlement, counselling and community-based programs.
A refugee, refugee claimant or other newcomer can contact VAST if they:
- have a need for trauma therapy
- face complicated settlement issues
- are not responding to the modalities being offered by other agencies for any number of reasons (i.e. cultural)
- are dealing with issues of displacement
- could benefit from a community environment
- could benefit from group work
What to expect on the first visit:
- VAST services are free
- You do not need an appointment to access VAST services; drop-ins are welcome.
- First visits often take 30 minutes but may take longer depending on your needs and how busy we are.
- No documentation is required; you do not need to show identification.
- If you are referred to therapy, we will try to get you an appointment within one week.
- All interviews and counseling are completely confidential.
- People with appointments will receive bus tickets for travel to and from our offices.
- Interpretation services are available; we often have Spanish, Farsi and French speaking staff on hand, and interpreters for other languages can be booked in advance.
- Child-minding services may be available.
- On your first day we will welcome you to our community kitchen where you can access available food.
- We invite all new clients to make use of our boutique which contains adult and children's clothing and various household items.
